Advanced Communications Workshop

Join the Outdoor Recreation School and instructor trainer Nancy Uschold, for an immersive weekend of training to experiment and expand your paddle sport teaching skills. The Advanced Communications Workshop (ACW) focuses on methods to promote seamless integration and address the needs of individuals with speech and language impairments, hearing impairments or deafness, and visual impairments or blindness. This hands-on course is designed for (but not limited to) American Canoe Association (ACA) Certified Instructors. It provides a basic understanding of disabilities along with a toolbox of techniques for skill acquisition and risk management. Upon successful completion, current ACA Instructors will earn the Advanced Communications Endorsement. Participants in this course use existing teaching experience with new methods as we consider working with specific individuals or audiences. Participants in the course should be comfortable teaching foundational paddling skills in a kayak. The meeting on September 9 will be over Zoom from 6–8 p.m. Central time; the rest of the program will be in-person at Fish Lake Regional Park on September 12 and 13 from 8:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Equipment provided.


Cedar Lake Farm Boat Tour & Picnic

The city of Prior Lake in collaboration with Three Rivers-Scott County are looking forward to a day trip to Cedar Lake Farm Regional Park. Located on the south shore of Cedar Lake near New Prague, Cedar Lake Farm Regional Park is a picturesque site for picnicking, fishing, educational and recreational activities. Join us as we explore the park, take a group boat tour on Cedar Lake, fish from the pier (fishing poles and boat tour provided by “Let’s Go Fishing”), check on the purple martin nests, take a stroll to tour a lakeside cabins, try your hand at watercolor painting and enjoy a self-packed picnic on the park grounds. Pencil in a back-up date of July 8 in case the weather does not cooperate on June 24. Dress for the weather, pack a picnic lunch, and bring water, sunscreen and bug spray. NOTE: Transportation available. You may meet at Cedar Lake Farm Regional Park at 10 a.m. or depart from Club Prior on a chartered bus at 9:30 a.m., arriving back at 2:30 p.m. Club Prior's address is 16210 Eagle Creek Ave SE, Prior Lake. The chartered bus is free thanks to an equity grant secured by Scott County through the Met Council. $30/person.


Dangerous Camp

Go on adventures through woods, fields and water. Build forts and fires, and catch fish and frogs. Go on a bike ride, learn about animal camouflage and cook over a campfire. Bikes and helmets provided. Extended care available for an additional $75; drop-off begins at 8:30 a.m. and pick-up ends at 5 p.m.


Extreme Fishing Camp: Half Moon Lake

n Extreme Fishing Camp, participants will learn to fish different bodies of water in search of various species like: panfish, bass, northern pike, walleye, catfish, redhorse sucker and more! Try different techniques and hone skills while learning from experienced Outdoor Recreation School instructors and professionals in the fishing industry. Try angling from a watercraft and from a riverbank. Equipment provided. Transportation to specific fishing locations will be provided by Outdoor Recreation School staff during camp hours.


Extreme Fishing Camp: North

In Extreme Fishing Camp, participants will learn to fish different bodies of water in search of various species like: panfish, bass, northern pike, walleye, catfish, redhorse sucker and more! Try different techniques and hone skills while learning from experienced Outdoor Recreation School instructors and professionals in the fishing industry. Try angling from a watercraft and from a riverbank. Equipment provided. Each day, campers will meet at one of four parks: French Regional Park, Fish Lake Regional Park, Silverwood Park and Mississippi Gateway Regional Park. Parents are responsible for drop-off and pick-up on each day of camp at one of the locations listed above. These locations will be communicated in the pre-camp email. Transportation to specific fishing locations will be provided by Outdoor Recreation School staff during camp hours.


Extreme Fishing Camp: South

Extreme Fishing Camp, participants will learn to fish different bodies of water in search of various species like: panfish, bass, northern pike, walleye, catfish, redhorse sucker and more! Try different techniques and hone skills while learning from experienced Outdoor Recreation School instructors and professionals in the fishing industry. Try angling from a watercraft and from a riverbank. Equipment provided. We will meet at different parks throughout the camp, including Hyland Lake Park Reserve, Lake Minnetonka Regional Park, The Landing and Bryant Lake Regional Park (Note: the June camp will not visit Bryant Lake). Parents are responsible for drop-off and pick-up on each day of camp at one of the locations listed above. These locations will be communicated in the pre-camp email. Transportation to specific fishing locations will be provided by Outdoor Recreation School staff during camp hours.

Join the Outdoor Recreation School for a summer camp focused on fishing and other fun recreation activities! History Kids Camp: The Myers Kids of Crane Island

Enjoy summertime at the lake. Immerse yourself in the story of young Marjorie Myers Douglas, author of "Barefoot on Crane Island"—a book about her childhood summers spent on an island in Lake Minnetonka in the 1920s. Explore the lake with a boat tour around the islands of Upper Lake Minnetonka. Go fishing from shore, swim at the swim pond and explore nature around the lakeshore. Meet live animals from Lowry Nature Center and discover the fascinating history of Lake Minnetonka.

Kayak Essentials

Hunt for river critters to use as bait for catfish, carp, bass and other large fish. Drop a line from shore and, while wading, head down river to find secret fishing spots. Transportation to specific fishing locations will be provided by Outdoor Recreation School staff during camp hours.


Mississippi River Fishing Camp

Join instructors from the Outdoor Recreation School to explore methods for river fishing and learn about unique river fish like gar and drum. Mother's Day Fishing

Join Outdoor Recreation School instructors and learn about types of fish, preparing equipment, baiting a hook and handling of fish once they are caught. Equipment and catch-and-release fishing license provided for the program only.


Native Rough Fish Scavenger Hunt

Ever heard of a bigmouth buffalo or freshwater drum? Join a naturalist to learn about Minnesota's unsung native rough fish, non-game fish, while practicing a new skill. Use a map to locate hidden trivia along the trail and collect prizes. Drop in any time. All ages welcome. Free.

Explore a river, pond, field and forest to discover where animals find their food, build their homes, sleep and play. Catch insects, frogs and fish, play games and meet animal ambassadors that call these habitats home. Outdoor Adventure Camp

Get ready for summer adventures! Put your survival skills to the test with shelter building and fire-making. Step back in time with historical games like spear throwing. Practice your precision and archery skills with a compound bow. Try your luck at baiting a hook and reeling in a fish at Bush Lake. Take to the water and enjoy a canoeing adventure on scenic Turtle Basking Pond. Learn essential outdoor skills and cool tricks from seasoned experts to prepare for your future adventures. Registration required by two weeks prior.


Paddle Palooza Camp

Spend your days on and in the water! Build your paddling skills with coaching from Outdoor Recreation School instructors. Go on adventures and play games while paddleboarding, kayaking, log rolling and canoeing. No previous experience required. Equipment provided. Rooted in Art: Fish & Macramé Tassel

Dive into the world of Minnesota fish and the role they play in our lakes and rivers. Explore how fish have adapted to survive underwater, how anglers responsibly connect with these species and what healthy aquatic ecosystems need to thrive. Participants will craft their own macramé fish tassel while reflecting on fins, scales and movement.


Stand-up Paddleboard Lesson

Ready to find your balance? Join Outdoor Recreation School instructors to learn the fundamental skills and versatility of stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). You’ll learn about the equipment, basic paddle strokes and how to navigate the water safely in variable conditions. Practice paddling in a variety of positions—laying, sitting, kneeling and standing—and gain confidence getting on and off your board in the water. Whether you’re brand new to paddleboarding or looking to refine your skills and build confidence, this session is designed to meet you where you’re at. $35/person.


Swimming Lessons: Level 2

Learn how to fully submerge and hold your breath, change direction of travel, and more. Practice front, jellyfish and tuck floats. Successful demonstration of Level 1 skills required. Learn water safety and swimming techniques. Instructors are lifeguards certified through the American Red Cross to teach swimming lessons. Program participants and family members in their household receive a $3 discount for season swim pond wristbands. Please call Guest Services at 763-559-6700 to receive the discount. Voices in Fishing: Trout in the Driftless

Voices in Fishing series, hosted by the Outdoor Recreation School, provides a platform for anglers from various communities. Each session will be held in the cozy Oakwood Room at the French Visitor Center, with a fire crackling to spark your interest in spring fishing opportunities and happenings. This week, Melissa Wagner from Women Anglers of Minnesota will share about chasing fish in the southeast corner of our region, known as the “Driftless Area.” Her presentation will cover some background information on the unique geography and sport, suggestions on techniques and gear and delve into how you can take the next steps to chase stream trout this spring. This is a free program directed to ages 10 and older, though all ages are welcome to attend. Pre-registration is preferred, but day-of drop-ins are also welcome to join. Participants ages 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult.


Wildlife Adventures Camp

Explore and discover what lives in and around the Mississippi River. See how many types of animals you can catch and release, from small mammals and insects to fish and frogs. Meet the animal ambassadors from the Gateway Center and have fun with new friends. Extended care available for an additional $75; drop-off begins at 8 a.m. and pick-up ends at 5 p.m.
